Oakland Asian Cultural Center (OACC) presents an evening of readings and reflection on the APIA queer experience, Featuring Aimee Suzara, Joel Tan, and Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha. The evening will start with contributions from students from the Oakland Word program.

Power Struggles or Peace in Multi-Generational Homes?

We've been in home limbo for the past month or so. In a week and a half, my husband, our daughter and I will set off on our road trip from Connecticut to our new home in Los Angeles, CA. My mom is taking over the house we currently live in, so we've been living together since she sold her condo three weeks ago. It has been...interesting.

When Reality Looks Like Me: The RAMS' 35th Anniversary Gala Review

As promised, I attended Richmond Area Multi-Services (RAMS') 35th Anniversary Gala on May 12th. Themed "Changing Reality: the Voices of Asian American TV Stars," RAMS sought to connect reality television to mental health. So that night, TV show champions Tammy and Victor Jih (Amazing Race, Season 14), Chloe Dao (Project Runway, Season 2), Chef Hung Huynh (Top Chef, Season 3) and Dr. Pamela Ling (Real World, Season 3) took the stage. They were introduced by Senator Leeland Yee, who called the panel "one large group therapy."

"Dirty Hands" David Choe Documentary Now Playing at the Roxie

Filmmaker Harry Kim followed urban artist David Choe for seven years, documenting Choe's turbulent coming-of-age as an artist. The resulting documentary, "Dirty Hands," isn’t simply about art -- it is art.  Kim brings us beyond the spray paint, the urine, and soy sauce that Choe uses on his canvases, and presents a strikingly intimate, raw portrait of the artist.
