Chicago's Devon Avenue: A Retrospective

After a few years, they moved to Ohio – where I was born – but even then, we would take monthly trips to Devon Avenue (Chicago’s Little India) to buy things like goat meat and eat at the fancy Indian restaurants that lined the streets. Between my parents' stories and memories of those trips out of the white-washed suburbia of Southwestern Ohio to the urban streets full of people who looked like me – Chicago has always felt a little bit like home. I have a feeling I’ll end up living in that city one day and have always been fascinated by the population of Devon Avenue.

Here at Hyphen, we’re also really interested in doing more stories about Asian Americans in the Midwest. I came across this great package of stories about businesses on Devon and how things have changed with time.

These are the kinds of stories we are interested in -- trend stories looking at Asian American populations in the Midwest -- what kinds of issues are Asian Americans in Michigan or Kansas thinking about? So, Midwesterners, what should we be covering out there? Send us story ideas!

My school is about three hours away from Chicago. I saw my first snowfall last December in Peoria. We didn't just get a dusting, but an avalanche of snow (12 inches to be exact)! I couldn't stop laughing/smiling at my first snowfall (actually it was sleet). Being from Hawaii, I still get goosebumps whenever I see those microscopic-like diamonds falling from the sky...
