Hyphen magazine - Asian American arts, culture, and politics

Jake Shimabukuro Graces Cover of Hyphen's New Legacy Issue

The new issue of Hyphen is about to come out, and here's a sneak peek at the cover, which features ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro.

We'll have an interview with Jake, and we'll be posting other photos from the cover shoot here soon.

Other stories to look for in The New Legacy Issue are:

  • Asian adoptees who are adopting children from their birth countries as a way to reclaim their heritage.
  • Laotian Americans who are working to clear the millions of unexploded bombs in Laos, a legacy of the war in Southeast Asia.
  • Asian food has gone mainstream, but why are fewer and fewer Asian Americans cooking it at home?
  • Find out how documentary-maker James Z. Feng got behind the scenes of the Mixed Martial Arts world.
  • Music highlights the Filipina hip-hop group Rhapsodistas and talks to Shin-B about fighting the good fight for female Asian emcees.
  • In First Person, Hyphen Publisher Lisa Lee recounts her time in a weight-loss spa as a young adult and how she faced down the pressure to be thin.
  • Pilgrims (What Is Lost and You Cannot Regain), the winning entry in the Asian American Short Story Contest.

We'll post previews of those stories and everything else from The New Legacy Issue in the next couple of weeks as the print edition makes its way to subscribers and newsstands. To read it all, subscribe!
