Adam Carolla, Kiss My Filipino Ass.

I don't really follow Adam Carolla's career because, since the days of the Man Show, I've grown to think of him as little more than a douchebag whose misguided acerbic humor fails to obscure a serious intellectual deficiency. I wasn't even sure he had a career anymore, to be honest. But evidently he does -- and it consists of racist rants disseminated via podcast (the obvious follow-up to racist-rants-disseminated-via-basic-cable and racist-rants-disseminated-via-radio).

Last week, while discussing boxing with a caller, he delivered a small-minded, xenophobic diatribe against Manny Pacquiao and the entire Philippine nation [video below]. Feigning anger about Manny's refusal to give blood before a fight, he accused Manny of taking steroids, called him an "illiterate," "fucking idiot" who "prays to chicken bones" and had the following to say about the Philippines in general:

Here's how you know your country doesn't have a lot going for it: Because everything is about Manny Pacquiao.

Get a fucking life as a country. is all you fucking got this illiterate guy who won't give up blood who happens to smash other guys in the head better than other people? That's all you have?

Really? You want some guy with brain damage running your country? Why don't you get your shit together? They got this and sex tours! That's all they have over there! Get your shit together, Philippines! Jesus Christ!

That's the beauty of this country. We got way too much shit going on in this country. There's so much shit going on that you couldn't build your whole existence around LeBron James or Tiger Woods....Like the Philippines, that's all you got. That's it. I say get a life. Don't live vicariously through some dude who doesn't live there.

Do they do those sex tours over there? ...A bike sex tour? Don't they have sex tours there? See if they can do a sex tour over there, book that for me. Go to priceline.

I had a lot of both visceral and intellectual reactions to this blather, but I won't bother to waste time defending my mother's land, or Manny, since Carolla's vitriolic spew is so ignorant and asinine that it would give him too much credit to expound on how sex tourism in the Philippines is an real and devastating problem affecting tens of thousands of girls and women, or how a century of bad US foreign policy is partially responsible for the extreme poverty and inopportunity that fuel such intense Filipino pride over an exception like Manny

But I will ask: Wtf did we do to you, Carolla?? After all, this isn't the first time you've picked on Asians. Remember when you said that Hawaiians were too stupid to dial a phone, are all in-bred, and haven't made any meaningful contributions to society? Remember when you dedicated several segments of your radio show to parodying the Asian Excellence Awards, during which you repeatedly chanted "Ching-Chong"? And remember when you had to apologize for all of that shit?

Now don't get me wrong -- I do get why you hate on Manny. He's, as you say, a 5'6" guy from a Third World country who has more money in his bank account than you will make probably in your entire life. And he's a world-renowned, undefeated boxing champion, whereas you pretend to be a boxer and got voted off the only program even remotely resembling a sporting event that you will ever participate in (Dancing with the Stars). I even understand your calling him an illiterate idiot -- it probably makes you feel better about dropping out of community college.

But why Asians as a whole? Did they get better grades than you in high school (they obviously did in college)? Do the girls not like you? Do you have something against our many contributions to the American society? Maybe you happened to forget that hundreds of thousands of Filipinos fought alongside US soldiers during WWII -- and that most of them didn't even get paid for it. Or that the US gets more medical professionals from the Philippines than any other country in the world (remember that when your next "boxing" injury lands you in the hospital).

It's pretty easy to talk shit on the air about an impoverished country a world away -- I guess you forgot that we're actually all around you (especially in California, where you live). The last census had us as the 2nd largest immigrant group in the country, after Mexicans. And that growing group is seriously pissed. And not just petition pissed, or facebook group pissed, but the kind of Filipino-type-pissed that transforms a hungry, skinny kid from Bukidnon into the "Fighter of the Decade."

But, judging by the speed at which you tapped out a 140-character apology, I'm guessing you've probably already realized the depth and breadth of our ire:

However, not everyone is twitter-literate, so let me translate your apology for the masses:

"Sorry if I offended many of u"

Shit, I didn't realize there so many of "u."

"I don't preplan my commentary"

Come on, improvised racism doesn't count, does it? It does?!

"I try to be provoctive"

I almost graduated community college - why the eff can't I spell "provocative" ??

"By the way, I think manny is a great fighter"

Please don't let Manny pummel me to dust.

In conclusion: Get a fucking life as a comedian, Corolla, and quit hating on us just because your white male privilege is eating our dust.

Oh dear.

It would be absolutely insane if Manny moved into politics, both for the Philippines (he's not a politician and would be no more than a puppet) and for Manny himself (his money would disappear faster than water down the drain). Adam was right on this point - it would be ludicrous to vote him into office. (As dumb as allowing ERAP or Imelda back, but that's another story.)

As for the sex-tours, well hundreds of thousands of Japanese, Korean and Western men flock to the Philippines every year to indulge their sexual whims in the towns and cities of this nation. I find it absolutely disgusting. Almost as disgusting as the fact that the sex industry aimed at LOCALS makes up close to 90% of the total sex trade in the Philippines. Fact.

Before we all start getting upset at some "comedian's" stupid comments maybe we should turn our critical eye towards ourselves and see if there's any truth behind the "jokes".

Just a thought.

Consider the source

So many have made such eloquent replies to this 'hysterical' (to some) biggot.
While some argue, "That's what comedians do," the truly funny comics DON'T ridicule others, in spite of opines to the contrary.
THIS JUST IN: Impotence has been linked to puti pendejos who try to be funny at the expense of other races....stay tuned....

Adam's comment

Adam is obviously the illiterate and uneducated one, especially about Filipinos...

Anonymous wrote 1 year 43 weeks ago

Like he said, "Get a life"

Let me start by mentioning the fact that I am a full-blooded Filipino. You all should get a life and don't worry about stupid shit like this. Ok, go ahead and put Adam Corolla on blast for a bit, but then you have to go on with your lives. Save all the energy you've built up to hate on Adam Corolla and go do something useful and more meaninful.

Maybe it's because I grew up in America, but I never understood why Filipinos take credit for things that other Filipinos do. Yes, Manny is the best boxer I've ever seen and I'm one of his biggest fans. But being Filipino doesn't make me any cooler just because the best boxer in the world is also Filipino. People should look at their own accomplishments and make goals so they can be proud of themselves individually.

I'm just saying - get a life. Be proud of YOURSELF instead of being proud to be a Filipino because of Manny Pacquiao.

Anonymous wrote 1 year 43 weeks ago

Wow, really?

I am Filipino. I grew up there and moved here. One of the great things about being here is that peopel can say whatever they want. And serously, are you getting angry at a COMEDIAN? he's hilarious! He makes fun of EVERY CULTURE. Thats something comedians do.

Seriously, if this is all you have to do with your time, you should really get a new hobby. Who the fuck cares.

Public Apology

Well this is what Adam Carolla wants, Publicity! since as this article says, he isn't as popular as before, and now we are giving him the publicity by even making comments... well then i guess if he really wants publicity, he better make a public apology and broadcast it nationwide make it a headline or whatever.

anonymous wrote 1 year 43 weeks ago

Others say he's just

Others say he's just comedian expressing what he likes to say...freedom of speech...WTF!!!!! He's asshole not a comedian and just kissing his boss ass, wanted to gain popularity so you could stay in your job. He's an educated person supposed to act as civilized but not different from a terrorist now because he destroys the image of America and he should be on the watch list. He's racist! You can talk about Manny because this guy is soft and forgiving but not the entire Island. Branding asia specially PI linking like sex tour is a sensitive comment. Is that you know about PI idiot. Adam you think most people there will vote because a guy is popular, NO!!! again you idiot ! better research first. He should have won in the past when he ran a position in his province. Oh, is that too much!  I am sorry Adam. I hope you'll forgive me. Just expressing....whatever..

Mr. Carolla, I'm sorry for

Mr. Carolla, I'm sorry for you...you've shown to the whole world how ignorant and cheap you are.

You did not bring shame to the Philippines, you brought shame to your self and to your profession.

You are a mockery to us  Filipino, and I'm sure the whole world also.

Adam Carolla is a flaming douchebag

As I'm reading these comments, I'm finding a few that are all "it's not a big deal." Well, I think in this case, he was more than just JOKING. He went too far. WAY TOO FAR. He needs to learn his lesson...somehow. I mean...come on...seriously??? Pacquiao "prays to chicken bones?" I believe he was dissing Christianity there...and I am offended by Adam Carolla's words because I am Christian AND Filipino. And Manny Pacquiao just happens to be one of my heroes. Pacquiao is a VERY wise man, who is often underestimated. He is not freaking illiterate. If someone doesn't know how to speak English, that doesn't mean they are illiterate. Pacquiao was born and raised in the Philippines, so he probably speaks Tagalog, and English probably wasn't his first language. And he doesn't even live here in the US. He lives in the PHILIPPINES. Adam Carolla better watch out! because we all know, Pacquiao fights hard.

I agree that Corolla is

I agree that Corolla is totally obnoxious and offensive, as were his comments.  However, rhe whole "you're just mean because you're jealous" argument isn't really a strong rebuttal, nor is simply pointing out that what he said was offensive. Both facts may be true, but that hardly constitutes a real argument.  It also leaves no room for meaningful discussion about race.  I'm all for going after Corolla, but let's do it from the standpoint of dismantling the content of what he said, rather than resorting to 5th grade tactics.

Seriously

I am a Filipino-American.  I have a good sense of humor and I even like Adam Carolla, but the shit he just said was so ignorant, I can't help but be pissed.  He obviously doesn't know anything about Filipino culture or the Philippines.  He uses the possibility of Manny Pacquiao joining congress as an indication of a bereft country.  WTF?  Who is the governor of California right now?  What did Ronald Reagan do before he joined politics? There's a lot to say about American culture.  Filipino youth are probably way more educated about and engaged in their political system.  Seriously, you have to be a fuckin' idiot to not take representations of people in the media without a grain of salt.  Ever consider the fact that it's just exciting to have an athelete make such waves internationally.  After all, you are talking about him aren't you?

Anonymous wrote 1 year 43 weeks ago

I am a Filipino!

I am a Filipino and very proud of it.  What Mr. Corolla said, joking or not, he very well went overboard.  Obviously, he didn't know what he was talking about.  But as a radio commentator (whatever his job is), wouldn't you do some research before degrading a country?  He can comment anything about Manny Pacquiao all day and all night, but insulting the entire Philippines and its people which he know NOTHING about?  Well that's a different story.

T-bone wrote 1 year 43 weeks ago

my 2 cents

First of all... Adam is not a racist, although he does make a lot of racial jokes (there is a huge difference between the two).  AS a regular listener I know that his guests include people of various ethnicities, sexual orientation, etc.  Actually one of the greatest guests he had on his radio show (and podcast later) was an Asian gay man (George Takei)..  you think if he truly hated Asians he would have him on?

Also he regularily praises the Asian community, and uses them as an example of people who are family oriented; believe in education and are successful because of that.

He does not pretend to be a boxer; he was a boxer and a boxing trainer (obviously not nearly as good as Manny).  I don't think he's jealous of his success though; he has made a great living himself..  The brain damage comment was a joke and obviously related to the fact that Manny is a boxer and unfortunately many of them get brain damage over their carreers.

Also, he had Manny's trainer on his show before a year or two ago, to promote an upcoming fight for Manny.  I don't remember the exact details, but the interview seemed to go really well.   That was also the first time I have learned that Manny ran away from home when his dad ate his dog...pretty crazy story...

I'm a big fan of his, but I do agree that he went a little too far with this rant, and it wasn't as funny as his normal stuff.  I do think that if you listened to him on a regular basis you would find that your assessment of his personality is inaccurate.

britt wrote 1 year 43 weeks ago

I agree 100% with this

I agree 100% with this article, and for you fools who are trying to say it's 'not a big deal,' I'd like to see how you react when a comedian of a different race belittles yours. I'm full filipino, and usually, I take all stereotypical jokes in stride; However, when these 'jokes' turn into nasty, hateful comments, I do get offended. It's fairly frustrating to know that people are telling us to get over it . Would you? Would you tell victims of hate-crimes to 'just get over it?' Would you yourself get over a racist insult about your own ethnicity ? Think about it before you start telling a proud, strong Filipino race to get over that man's ignorant comments. And to whoever wrote this article, thank you, for expressing the viewpoints of many a prideful Filipino.

BOYCOTT CBS! Great JOB Catherine!

I've sent your piece to friends all over the planet! Also I'm encouraging many people to sign a petition calling for a boycott of CBS Radio until an official apology is received.

Full Text below...

To:  Adam Carolla, CBS Radio

Dear Mr. Carolla,

On behalf of the Filipino and Filipino American community, we are writing with disappointment and disdain in your choice to verbally slander Manny Pacquiao, the Philippines, and the Filipino American community. Your words were unnecessary, hurtful, and erroneous. When you insinuate that Filipinos “pray to chicken bones” or that the Philippines only has “Manny Pacquiao and sex stores,” you fail to recognize the millions of Filipinos and Filipino Americans who have contributed significantly to the United States and to the entire world. We do not pray to chicken bones. We are Catholic, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, and other religious and non-religious people who are civilized, educated, and successful. We are not sex workers. We are doctors, nurses, teachers, professors, artists, community organizers, writers, politicians, journalists, engineers, activists, fashion designers, accountants, entrepreneurs, researchers, social workers, public health advocates, athletes, chefs, and post office workers. We have taken care of you in the hospital. We have taken care of your children. We have taken care of your elderly. We have worked hard to achieve our American Dream, and you have no right to denigrate us like this, merely to get attention.

This is not the first time you have gotten into trouble for your racist remarks. You’ve called Native Hawaiians “the world's dumbest people,” “retarded,” and “in-bred.” You’ve later insulted a Korean American actor by mouthing “ching-chong, ching-chong.” And now you apparently are trying to gain attention by insulting Filipinos and the Filipino American community. You apologized to the Asian American community before, but it seems that you have not yet learned your lesson.

It seems that time and time again, “celebrities” and “comedians” feel that it is acceptable to degrade Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in public forums. You would never have said such things about African Americans, as you recognize that your career would plummet, as exemplified by the falls of Michael Richards and Don Imus. What you need to recognize is that racial hate and ignorance about any group is wrong and unjust. And what you also need to recognize is that your hate towards Asian Americans, the fastest growing racial minority group in the United States, can also lead to your career’s demise too.

You say that the Philippines has "nothing better going on for it” because of their support for Manny Pacquiao. What you fail to recognize is that the Filipino American community has strength in our unity and our ability to mobilize, particularly when we are blatantly mistreated or belittled by people in the public eye. There are an estimated 3 million Filipino Americans in the United States, with millions of other Filipinos across the diaspora. We are projected to become the largest Asian American population in the United States, and we have allegiances with many communities of color. We will boycott your show and all of your parent companies unless you offer a public apology to Manny Pacquiao, the people of the Philippines, and the Filipino American community.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

He's a comedian.  Comedians push boundaries.   SNL makes fun of blind people and we laugh.  Everyone needs to lighten up and not take life so seriously.  And if you try the "I did not know he even had a career line" then shouldn't Adam Carolla's insignificance makes it a non story for you?

Yeah, the US is great.

Yeah, the US is great. There's "so much going on"... seriously? I know he was probably talking out of his a$$, but he's basing the significance of entire countries based on the quantity of sports figures? Ridiculous. In my opinion, the significance of sports-related media content is a sign of people "not having a life." It's so generic and empty (like many things is the US) and unchallenging to the mind despite all the statistics and details people memorize and become obsessed with. I don't think you can really be a sports fan like he probably is and have room to make fun of an entire other culture for being limited.

He just hates asians

He pulled another racial bomb a few years back and basically got his hand slapped and apologized to asian people in the entertainment business BUT:

when Carolla's show was cancelled. In his second-to-last show on Feb. 19, he was in the middle of talking to a caller who was sad to see Carolla go, and suddenly he started talking about how he was so glad that he didn't have to keep an eye on " swearing or a-holes like Guy Aoki. Racist a-holes, by the way, like Guy Aoki, who’re gonna climb up my ass if I say anything about all the Asian people that he, evidentally, represents. That’s every single Asian person on the entire planet. I will no longer have to worry about a-holes like that or guys like Jack Silver that are paranoid about extortionist racist a-holes like Guy Aoki." Jack Silver was Carolla's program director at the station Carolla broadcasted from, 97.1 FM.
