Maestro Ali Akbar Khan (1922 - 2009)
Maestro Ali Akbar Khan, considered by many to be among the greatest musicians of our times, passed away in San Rafael, CA on June 18, 2009. He was in many ways a true embodiment of Asian America and was one of India's most important musical ambassadors to the west. His father, the mystical music genius Baba Allaudin Khan, trained Ali Akbar Khan rigorously and instructed him to take classical north Indian music to the West. Khansahib carried with him the open spirit of his father, who made it possible for any one, regardless of background, to learn classical north Indian music from a master. He established the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, CA in 1967, and went on to teach thousands of students.

You can watch a brief video of Ali Akbar Khan demonstrating the sarode here

The following obituary was written by Teed Rockwell:

Ustad Ali Akbar Khan

1922 - 2009

AAK10.jpg

Swara Samrat Maestro Ali Akbar Khan passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on June 18, 2009.  Khansahib (as he was affectionately and respectfully addressed) had been a dialysis patient since 2004, and had been enduring numerous health issues ever since. He continued teaching publicly at the Ali Akbar College until just weeks ago, and taught music at home until the day he died.

The obituaries throughout India and the rest of the world have rightly stressed that Khansahib was a musical genius of the stature of Beethoven and Mozart. However, those of us in the Bay Area are especially grateful for another of his great accomplishments. This was not something he directly created, but rather something that he inspired in others. Students of Indian music came to the Bay area solely because he was here, from Japan, South America, Europe, even India itself. Other great Indian teachers followed, and the result was a community devoted to classical Indian culture that deeply influenced the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. The early issues of India Currents were devoted almost entirely to calendar listings of concerts by these students and teachers, and Khansahib remained the central inspiration of that community for decades. He was admired and loved, and will be greatly missed.

Khansahib was famous for his performances at the world greatest concert halls, and for his many recordings. Eight months of every year, however, he gave himself entirely to his students. We were constantly inspired by Khansahib¹s example of artistic dedication and compassionate patience, and  anyone who tried to master the profound intricacies of his lessons was forever changed by that experience. These lessons contained centuries of tradition seamlessly interwoven with his own unique genius. No one learned how to play them as well as he did, but everyone learned how to listen, and shared their enthusiasm with friends, and friends of friends. The result was an audience for Hindustani music which was unmatched for both ethnic diversity and devotion to artistic excellence. It is both heartbreaking and inspiring to realize that this community can and must now go on without him.

The memorial service and burial was held at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery Sunday, June 21st at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Ali Akbar College of Music (AACM) for the Ali Akbar Khan Library. Online donations can be made at http://aacm.org

From Mr. Hyphen 2008: Thank You
I wanted to send a big thank you to the Mr. Hyphen committee as well as Hyphen magazine for giving us the opportunity to have a platform to celebrate the Asian American male! It was truly an eye opening experience not only for me but for the sold out crowd that filled the OACC to gather, acknowledge and celebrate what it means to be Asian American, to share our common bond and the messages of our respective nonprofit organizations!

The pictures speak for themselves as the six contestants spoke, sang, danced, pranced and "vogued" their way across that stage and it was memorable for all that attended. I am pleased to say that the message was clear: "We are one people." All the men and women that tirelessly dedicate their free time and talents to produce such a high-quality publication and amazing competition should truly be proud of the progress that we are making. I said this during the Q&A and firmly believe that "we will no longer be known as a passive community and we must band together to redefine what it means to be Asian American!"

I am excited to be amongst the movers and shakers and supporters of our communities as we propel forward and reach out to mainstream America as one Asian American community!

Aristotle Garcia (Six Days of Mr. Hyphen 2008)
aristotle garcia1.jpg

Mr. Hyphen 2008 contestant Aristotle Garcia will represent the Filipino American Arts and Exposition, a grassroots, non-profit organization that contributes to the artistic and cultural pride of the Filipino American community.  It is a vital part of the rich tapestry of cultures and ethnic communities of the San Francisco Bay Area through its promotion of Filipino American art, music, film and dance.

About Aristotle:

I love being on stage and I can't say this enough but I always show PINOY pride in anything that I do.
Long ago, Filipino men wrote music with the sole purpose of singing them under the windows of the ones they wish to woo.  Now, Aristotle does that and more as he makes a name for the Filipino community both on and off the stage.  A singer himself, Aristotle also works behind the set as an active representative of the FAAE.  Being the associate producer and talent coordinator for the Pistahan Parade and Festival, he is recently responsible for putting forth the largest Filipino festival outside of the Philippines.

I am Mr. Hyphen because of my energetic being and thirst for more.  I hope to represent not only the Filipino American community but also the Asian American community... as I have found that each community within the Asian American community needs to bridge the gap that separates us.

Rockson Yan (Six Days of Mr. Hyphen 2008)
Rockson Yan.jpg

Mr. Hyphen 2008 contestant Rockson Yan will represent Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach, a community based, social justice organization focusing on domestic violence, immigration rights, elder abuse and human trafficking.  It also has a youth program called the Youth Advisory Council that advocates anti-domestic/dating violence to middle and high school students.

About Rockson:

Whether it's in a shower or on a stage, Rockson can probably sing better than you.  Beating out 100 other contestants to win the 2007 Sing Tao singing competition, he proves the musical connotation of his name is no fluke.  As a drummer, pianist and guitarist, he plucks the fruits of musical delight and delivers them fresh to your table.  For seven years now, Rockson has been active in the Youth Advisory Council, working with youth and dedicating himself to becoming a difference maker, helping to guide and lead the youth by training them to be anti-violence advocates themselves.  Rockson was also a core assisting personnel for the Asian Student Union of San Francisco State University.

I plan to further contribute to the community by promoting a positive image amongst Asian Americans... especially because the mainstream media lacks Asian representation.  I am proud of my own identity as Asian American, and have been promoting the same awareness not only in but outside of the Youth Advisory Council... I would like to be an inspiration to individuals who are also pursuing their dreams.

Eric Tam (Six Days of Mr. Hyphen 2008)
Eric Tam.jpgMr. Hyphen 2008 contestant Eric Tam will represent the Asian American Donor Program, a community non-profit organization geared towards saving lives.  AADP is an official recruitment group of the National Marrow Donor Program, specializing in conducting outreach and donor drives in the Asian Pacific Islander and Multi-racial communities.

About Eric:

Self-proclaimed man of courage, with a head of "fabulous hair and a charming smile," Eric is humble as well and admits he has "very little talent," especially when it comes to Jay-Z impersonations.  Still, at 5'8" and 160lbs, Eric is the model of responsibility.  Being the oldest son in his family, Eric has held jobs since he was 14 so he could help provide for his siblings and, eventually, put his brother through college.  Working with AADP and ProjectMichelle, Eric is now on a mission to save the life of his friend and other leukemia patients.

If I am selected as Mr. Hyphen my goal is to rejuvenate the importance of compassion among our community.  It is important for our community to genuinely care about the well being of one another or else the organizations that are trying to help the community will not be successful.

Maurice Seaty (Six Days of Mr. Hyphen 2008)
maurice.seaty.mrhyphen.JPGMr. Hyphen 2008 contestant Maurice Seaty will represent the Southeast Asian Student Coalition, a progressive organization run by the students at UC Berkeley.  The mission is to "unite Southeast Asian communities, particularly those bounded by the historical context of the Viet Nam War, and to address the social injustices, the economic inequalities, and the political under representation that they face."

About Maurice:
"where are my peoples at and do YOU know what's up with us?"
Mentor, teacher, practitioner of lyrical arts; Maurice is the son of Cambodian refugees and an avid spokesperson for his community.  With a metaphorical license in carpentry, he attempts to build a bridge between Southeast Asian communities and the larger Asian American communities, as he senses a troubling disconnection between the two that's causing some Southeast Asians to not want to identify as Asian Americans.

As Mr. Hyphen, I don't want to be labeled as a role model, but I want to reshape the way Asian American media views the Southeast Asian community, in a way that every person in the community can serve as their own role model.

Mike Liu (Six Days of Mr. Hyphen 2008)
MikeLiu.jpgMr. Hyphen 2008 contestant Mike Liu will represent Spring Bud, a program that partners with schools in less industrialized parts of China to aid girls who are deprived of education due to poverty, and the California Dragon Boat Association, an organization that develops team skills and leadership in youth through training and competing in dragon boat racing.

About Mike:

Dr. Frankenstein's creation pales in comparison to Mike, the well-blended embodiment of brains and brawn.  As a man who once answered all the try-out questions correctly for Jeopardy! College Edition, he is also the legend behind the crew that qualified for the dragon boat Club Crew World Championship of 2006.  At the time an officer for Stanford's Undergraduate Chinese American Association, Mike has now coached dragon boat teams for the past five years.

I hope it shows through that I'm multi-dimensional... with some persistent desires in life, among them to enjoy the company of other good people, value family, live well and make at least an incremental difference to the world....  I started paying attention to Hyphen magazine since last year's Mr. Hyphen event and wish to see it voice continue to be included.

scottchan.jpgMr. Hyphen 2008 contestant Scott Chan will represent Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics, a nonprofit organization that works to achieve its mission by developing leaders within Asian American and Pacific Islander communities across the country.  LEAP believes leaders know the issues and are capable of informing and empowering communities.

About Scott:
Mr. Hyphen should be a man who is in a committed relationship.  I have been dating the API community of Los Angeles for a few years now.  It has been great so far, because we're in a relationship where we each help one another grow.  There are times where it is tough but it is by enduring these struggles that our relationship reaches another level.
"Growing up practically white," Scott connected with his Chinese roots during college and credited his parents and their stories of coming to America as keys that helped him better define his own identity.  Now, as a non-profit guru, blogger and a big brother, Scott is a superhero who watches over his community without the spandex and cape.  And with a fan-base like his, it seems action figures are just a matter of time.

Mr. Hyphen 2007

Picture%202.png
With contestants baring all to raise money for a good cause--from revealing the passion behind their leadership in the Asian American community to stripping off their shirts in the sleepwear round -- it's fair to say that this year's Mr. Hyphen 2007 competition lived up to the success of last year's inaugural pageant (and then some). Riding on her own coat tails, once again the righteously funny Ms. Ali Wong emceed the event, held Saturday night at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center.

In the end, Luke Patterson won the crown and $500 for his non-profit of choice: Great Leap, an LA-based multicultural arts organization. It was a great show. And along the way, with the bravado on stage and the fanfare in the audience, it was hard to tell who had more fun — the handsome and talented contestants or their admiring public. Here are some memorable moments from the evening. Share yours in the comments:

Luke Patterson (Six Days of Mr. Hyphen 2007)

Luke.jpg

Contestant Luke Patterson will represent Great Leap at Mr. Hyphen 2007. Founded by Nobuko Miyamoto, Great Leap is a multicultural performing arts organization rooted in the Asian American community that promotes cross-cultural exchange through the creative and collaborative process of performances, workshops and community residences.

About Luke:

Rapper. Graffiti artist. Non-profit office hooligan. Mentor. Luke Patterson is many things to many people. He's an MC for the L.A.-based hip-hop group Aesthetics Crew. He's an organizer against police brutality. He's a role model to youths who need it the most, through his work at the APA Youth Resolution Center. Most importantly though, Luke wants to bring together the multi-cultural communities and he'll even tame a lion while riding a unicycle blindfolded to do so. With a multi-talent like this it shouldn't take much to make that great leap to Mr. Hyphen infamy!

I would hope to do a lot of work in building bridges between the Asian & Asian American communities with other communities of color. Through my work I have seen that there is still a lot of ignorance, stereotypes and mis- or non-communication between our community and other Black and Brown people. I would like to do a lot of work breaking down stereotypes and pre-conceived notions of who “Asians” are, what we can be beyond the model minority ideas, and how strong we can be politically and community organizing-wise. I think that if our communities are all united on a deeper level of understanding and respect, not just on the surface of acceptance of each other, then we can make real progressive change for all of us together.

Tingwei Lin (Six Days of Mr. Hyphen 2007)

tingwei.jpg

Mr. Hyphen 2007 contestant Tingwei Lin will represent the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation, which develops affordable housing and community facilities with integrated services, focusing on Asian and Pacific Islander communities and diverse low income populations in the East Bay area of California.

About Tingwei:

I hope to be a positive representation for Asian American males and the Asian American community as a whole. I guess I'd like to help that one awkward kid struggling with his identity by perhaps giving him an alternative archetype of Asian-ness than is typically presented. Damn, I know i struggled with it a lot growing up.

For Tingwei Lin, pride and humility comfortably coexist. A champion swimmer, he credits his humbleness to his years spent a la Speedo in the public eye. Although he still maintains that coveted swimmer physique, Tingwei now channels his efforts into helping those in the APA and low income community buy their first homes, save for college and start their own businesses. With that athletic build and heart of gold, you'll agree there's not a "Ting" wrong with him!

As a friend observed, I have been growing more and more into my Asian-ness, my Asian identity, since I moved to California almost 2.5 years ago. Envisioning myself as Mr. Hyphen is a culmination of all of that self-acceptance.

Jason Woo (Six Days of Mr. Hyphen 2007)

jason_woo.jpg

Mr. Hyphen 2007 contestant Jason Woo will represent the California Dragon Boat Association, which provides education and instruction to the general public on dragon boating; enhances bonding and interaction among different ethnic and cultural groups locally, nationally and internationally; and provides youth programs centered on paddling activities and leadership.

About Jason:

At the age of 20, I was blessed with the opportunity to join the San Francisco Fire Department. Being exposed to the real world so early in life, I felt that I had to mature quickly. Life is short, enjoy it. I never waste a second in my life.

Jason Woo can probably kick your ass. An avid snowboarder, cyclist, swimmer and any-form-of-physical-activity enthusiast, Jason was the recipient of the Firefighter of the Year award in 2004 for rescuing people whose boat had capsized off of Ocean Beach. And if that isn't enough, he's mentored youth in Daly City, CA through Asian American Recovery Services and is a member of the Asian Fire Association. However, it is his work with the Dragon Boat Association that has led him to forge cultural understanding using paddling sports, turned him into a high school Dragon Boat coach and ultimately, a competitor at the World Championships of Dragon Boating. Not that he'll use his incredible powers against if you if you don't, but giving Jason a hearty "Woo!" when hits the stage couldn't hurt.

Anthem Salgado (Six Days of Mr. Hyphen 2007)

anthem.jpg

Mr. Hyphen 2007 contestant Anthem Salgado will represent Babae SF. Though not a card-carrying member, he believes in Babae's mission of addressing the rights and welfare of multi-generational Filipino women through educational discussions and organizing campaigns.

About Anthem:

He's run 26 miles for an AIDS marathon, learned steer wrestling from Apache Native Americans and walked little old ladies across the street. All this in addition to being a production manager at Kularts and a board member of the Mind Power Collective! An artist in his own right, Anthem is the Jan Brady in the middle of nine siblings. He also has Jedi mind powers. We bet you'll be pledging your allegiance to this Anthem by the end of the night.

I've been mistaken for about every type of Asian, even by other Asians. And after learning about the Vincent Chin story as a young adult, I realized my responsibility to self-represent that pan-Asian connection rather than simply undergo it.

Jeffrey Sichaleune - (Six Days of Mr. Hyphen 2007)

jeffrey.jpg

Contestant Jeffrey Sichaleune will represent the Midwest Asian American Students Union at Mr. Hyphen 2007. As a coalition of Asian American student groups, MAASU fosters political unity in the Midwest. It promotes leadership, encourages APIA students to work toward social change, and assists schools with the establishment of APIA student organizations and programs.

About Jeffrey:

Personality-wise, I am like a durian--so weird, but so good.

The Washington-born librarian is no stranger to the pageant circuit. A runner-up in the Mr. Asian University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign pageant, Jeffrey has taken an incredibly active role in the Asian American community from his days at the Midwest Asian American Students Union and helping develop the UIUC Asian American Cultural Center in 2005, to his involvement with the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association today. Discovering early in his academic life that engineering wasn't the path for him, Jeffrey eventually went on to earn a master's degree in Library and Information Science. His tenacity and intelligence sure puts the Dewey in our decimal!

I choose all of my activities with deliberate intention and hope to inspire and motivate others ... I would like to continue working with college students and mentor the next generation of conscious Asian American activists. Anecdotal evidence states that college is the best time of a person's life. Research points out that many people develop their Asian American identity in college, so the intersection of these statements can imply that college students are the foundation of the Asian American community. They are going to be our future leaders that serve interdisciplinary interests and are united by their common Asian American identity. ... As a self-identified Southeast Asian, I also think it is important to work with underrepresented Asian American groups to highlight the diversity of Asian Americans.

Billy Yeh (Six Days of Mr. Hyphen 2007)

billy.jpg

Mr. Hyphen 2007 contestant Billy Yeh will represent My Sister's House, which provides services for battered Asian and Pacific Islander women and children. Services include a shelter, culturally and linguistically appropriate domestic violence intervention, support groups, community outreach and intervention and a 24-hour multilingual crisis line.

About Billy:

Given the stark difference in the exposure given to Asian men vs. Asian women in the media, and the underrepresentation of API issues, I believe Mr. Hyphen has a duty to generate positive exposure for not only Asian men everywhere, but also API issues. Moreover, the seemingly irreparable damage done to our species by one William Hung, with whom I'm embarrased to admit sharing the same alma mater, needs to be undone.

An enthusiast of "long walks on the beach, beautiful sunsets," Billy Yeh wasn't always the Adonis you see today. After years of physical intimidation by his older brother, Billy hit the gym and transformed himself into what he humbly refers to as "the body of a god." In doing so, and subsequently wrestling his sibling into submission, Billy demonstrated the strength and willpower that served him well as a chair of UC Berkeley's Asian Political Association. He's hoping you'll feel the same and give him a big "Yeh" as he struts it down the stage.

Where others zig, I zag. Where others tic, I tac and toe. Where others rock, I scissor... you get the point.

House of Sharing - Stories of Wartime Sex Slavery

Koon-ja Kim, 81, was among an estimated 200,000 girls forced to serve Japanese soldiers as sexual slaves from 1937 to 1945. She spoke to a packed audience at CalArts today.

The film features a number of talented MFA students at CalArts including Nathan Ruyle (Sound Design/Mixing).

Love Your Asian American Artists!

The crucible of finals week in any academic environment is intense for all of us...it sure has been for me trying to crystallize a semester's worth of knowledge all in the heavy anticipation of wanting to get through to the glorious holidays. I used to feel that pressure differently being an undergraduate Biochemistry major. But now, being a graduate student at an Art school, it takes on a whole new creative dimension. Yep, I went from a science degree to a Fine Arts degree…imagine explaining that to all the Indian parents out there!
