With the new Star Trek movie coming out on Friday, it seems appropriate to revisit Hyphen's interview with John Cho and our look at racial stereotypes in the Trek universe from The Spaces Issue.

Six years ago, we published the first issue of Hyphen. Inside our pages, we had stories about Jin Tha MC, Shahzia Sikander, and the Asian American movement. We put filmmakers Justin Lin and Jon Moritsugu in a room and recorded their conversation. It took us a year to publish that first issue -- from deciding what kind of magazine we wanted to make, to creating Hyphen the organization at the same time we were creating Hyphen the magazine. I still remember the boxes and boxes of magazines piled up and the excitement of seeing that first issue for the first time.We threw a launch party in San Francisco. Would anyone come? Would people like the magazine? We were surprised when hundreds of people lined up outside the door and waited patiently to get inside the party. Wow. Asian America was hungry for a progressive, arty magazine after all. Most magazines fail within a year. But we beat the odds and survived that first year of publishing. Now, here we are six years later, still beating the odds -- thanks to our volunteer staff, our readers and our supporters.
It's our sixth birthday! That means it's time for a party. And you're invited.

Hyphen was conceived in 2003 by San Francisco Bay Area journalists and community leaders who saw the need for a publication about Asian America that would go beyond Lucy Liu, sushi and yet another examination of the "model minority" story. With award-winning design and fresh perspectives that aren't just about identity issues, Hyphen covers the artists and change-makers who are shaping what it means to be Asian American. By showcasing people outside the boundaries of stereotypes, Hyphen acts as a cultural catalyst, inspiring its readership to branch out — to do, think and create.
Hyphen is not-for-profit and run entirely by volunteers. The hundreds of hours spent by writers, artists, editors, designers, web gurus, bloggers, xyz coordinators, and other lackeys are all unpaid. It's truly a labor of love. That is why we desperately need you!

Have no doubt, my friends. That is all real rice. In fact, we used 500 pounds of rice in this cover shoot. 500 pounds! The hardest part of the shoot was carrying all that rice up three flights of stairs to this lovely loft where we shot the cover. I couldn't believe they had no elevator (isn't that illegal?), but hey, some day we'll be able to tell our grandkids that we carried 500 pounds of rice upstairs instead of snow. Erica Loh, our creative director, had the best workout of her life that day and even though I am ashamed to admit it, I did too.

Theatre Rice, a modern Asian American theatre company on the campus of Berkeley, has chosen Hyphen as the recipient of its charity fund! We attended the showcase last night to say a few words of thanks, and if you are in for a great laugh (and occasional warm and fuzzy feelings), you can still see the show tonight! The last performance this semester will be in 155 Dwinelle. Doors open at 7 pm and whatever you can give, $3 or more, Hyphen will be getting part of the proceeds to help us with 2009's printing and distribution costs. Go to their Facebook event for more information.

Hyphen was selected by Saucony to participate in their first-ever summer sports league! Team Hyphen will compete in obscure, "low-impact" sports like whiffleball and four square throughout the summer.
GAME 1: Hyphen vs. Frog Design
Our half-hour whiffleball game against the formidable Frog Design must have set some kind of record for speed. Five innings in 30 mins! In the end, PBR and Sparks gave Frog Design the gusto (and extra warmth) they needed to win by one run. We were bummed. But the resilient Team Hyphen quickly shook it off and headed to the bar as fast as possible to enjoy post-game boozing and booty shaking.

Not only is Chinese for Affirmative Action giving us office space, the longtime civil rights group honored Hyphen with one of its Flame of Justice awards for 2008 at its annual dinner last week in San Francisco. Hyphen Publisher Lisa Lee and I (above) accepted the award along with our board chair, Grace Kao, and Creative Director Stefanie Liang.

This may not seem like a big deal to you. But it's exciting to us. Hyphen, as some of you may or may not know, is a volunteer-run organization. We have big dreams of being able to sit down in the same room together to work on an issue of the magazine -- and get paid measly sums for it. But for now we get together at each other's houses, in coffee shops, and in the offices of other organizations kind enough to lend a helping hand (or an after-work-hours meeting space.)

Wow. So here it is.
This baby has had us running around like headless chickens for the past couple of months. For the designers and coders behind this, I won't even go into how this site had them twirled around its little fingers. But yes, finally, the birth of our new web presence. Why does Outkast's, "so fresh and so clean clean" seem so appropriate at this moment?
So, what do you all think?!
