The World's First Sikh Supermodel?
scbb.jpgThe difference a year makes. One year ago, Hoboken-area Sikh entrepreneur Hansdip Bindra made the news as a victim of a bias crime when a fellow bar-goer demanded he remove his turban, and, when he wouldn't, knocked it off for him. Fast forward one year and another Sikh entrepreneur-turned-media darling, Sonny Caberwal, is being hailed for his ability to flaunt yellow, pink and green turbans with panache in campaigns for Kenneth Cole and GQ.

News outlets such as the UK Telegraph are anointing him as "the world's only Sikh professional model." Is he?

I doubt it. The Sikh community is a strong (and apparently fashionable) one, and Sikh models abound within the community if you know where to look.

But if you don't, or prefer not to see them, such as the people behind major fashion runways who specialize in one-color-fits-all fashion shows, then Sonny Caberwal (now signed to modeling agency BOSS) can seem like a wonder.

Let's hope he's not a one-hit wonder.

Inauguration Week Linkfest
3213963117_dafc3faa1f.jpgToo many events and stories to round up on this historic day -- below is a short list of all things political (and tangentially political):

(Photo taken in San Francisco, where folks replaced Bush Street signs with Obama ones. Photo courtesy of 0x000org. Some rights reserved.)

  • Former Army Chief of Staff Gen. Eric Shinseki was confirmed today as the head of the Department of Veteran Affairs under the new administration, vowing to better care for wounded, homeless and unemployed veterans. Shinseki, the highest-ranking Asian American in military history, famously predicted in 2003 that a post-war Iraq would require more troops than the Bush administration had anticipated. (Despite being dismissed at the time, he was inevitably proven right.)

  • Along with Gen. Shinseki, five other Obama cabinet members were sworn in today, including Secretary of Energy Dr. Steven Chu.

Slumdog Sweeps, Hollywood Still Sucks and Hot Fair Trade Fashion
With Slumdog Millionaire sweeping the box office AND the Golden Globes, I guess South Asians are in line to be the ethnicity du jour again in 2009. Of course, I thought the movie was wildly entertaining, and gave a City of God glamour to the slums of Mumbai. (Suck this, City of Joy.) And seeing Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan make an 11th hour appearance to present really made it seem like Indian film had arrived.

But my champagne-fueled, Desi pride just couldn't get it up to full joy because where were the Asian Americans? But forget that even, where were the black people?

Melissa's Crafty Holiday Gift Guide
presents.jpgI'm not going to lie. I like stuff. I like getting it and I like giving it. As much as I can bravely plow through a mall during the holiday season ('tis the Hong Kong heritage in me), it's more pleasant to buy artist-made goods from the comfort and convenience of the Interwebs. Here're a few crafty, small-run, and indie media gifts.

Thakoon Designs Clothing Collection for Target
thakoon-target1.jpgthakoon-target2.jpg

Target recently announced the next designer for its limited-edition line and it's Thakoon Panichgul, whom we wrote about in issue 13. As budget fashionistas already know, the Minneapolis-based mass retailer with the hypnotic TV ads has been wooing up-and-coming designers to create limited-edition women's collections for them under its GO International label. Target gets the coolness cachet, the designers get tons of publicity and marketing, and we get facsimiles of designer goods at much cheaper prices. Thakoon's collection drops on December 28th and let's just say that I've already marked it in my calendar.

Desi Fashion Designer Convicted of Rape

File this under "Asian Shame":

Indian American fashion designer Anand Jon Alexander was convicted of 20 counts of serial rape this week.

The 35-year-old designer was featured on "America's Next Top Model" and has worked with celebrities like Paris Hilton, Oprah Winfrey and Mary J. Blige. He was born in India and emigrated to the States to study design. His work is described as fusing east and west (argh).

He's convicted of luring several girls and women aged 14 to 21 to his apartment with promises of modeling contracts, then raping them. His family has been campaigning to get the Indian government involved, to no avail. They say he was framed, but the arguments made on his support site seem flimsy at first glance.

Not much comment to make here. Here's his website if you want to see his designs. And see the interview above from about eight years ago for a little -- in hindsight -- creepy discussion of his being raised by women and encouraged to be a brat. It's too bad: he's well-spoken, particularly for someone in the celebrity-ridden fashion world, and his perspective is interesting. In another life he'd be a role model ... in fact, he probably has been. Just that thought, more than anything, makes me shudder.

Harajuku Lovers Perfume Bottles Look Mighty Asian
BellaSugar just did a review of the new Harajuku Lovers Perfume line by Gwen Stefani. Before they go on to say that the perfume smells like arse and slightly burns the skin, they point out that the bottles—which are shaped into different zanily dressed Japanese Harajuku girls—are cute, despite Gwen's troublesome Asian fetish.

Asian Designers Make Notable Blips On Vanity Fair's Radar
September's issue of Vanity Fair has a wonderful group photo of relatively young designers that they feel will are the new darlings of American fashion. I'm stoked that six Asians made the list: Doo-Ri Chung, Alexander Wang, Richard Chai, Peter Som, Philip Lim and Thakoon Panichgul. Although I'm not familiar with the work of Wang and Chai, I'm eager to look for their fall lines and I am already a fan of Chung and Som. Watch the video behind the photo spread.

My Weekend at the Asian American International Film Festival
n1209209_40572709_67912.jpgI met up with Hyphen's publisher Lisa Lee for some of the events going on at the AA International Film Festival in Manhattan. For those who haven't been to the Asia Society building, it is this huge, futuristic, stylish building in Manhattan's Upper East Side (70th at Park) that hosts all sorts of events throughout the year. Lisa has been at the festival since the start and been to many screenings. We went to the opening night afterparty at Forbidden City bar, then I joined her for films one day, and also a round table discussion the next day, as well as other random activities.

The films we saw were 'Heart Squared' and 'Option 3'. 'Heart Squared' was a nice short that was surreal, eccentric, and very stylish, and since there's no easy way to explain the film, I won't even try. 'Option 3' was a full length movie directed by Richard Wong, who was there for the screening and gave a brief talk at the beginning. Unfortunately, I couldn't sit through the entire thing, and though I kept waiting for it to get better, I ended up leaving midway. It wasn't bad per se; I just didn't personally enjoy it very much.

The next day was a very interesting panel discussion on Asian and Asian American aesthetics, with David Henry Hwang (playwright, M. Butterfly), Mary Ping (fashion designer), Billie Tsien (architect), Wayne Wang (filmmaker, The Joy Luck Club), and Dennis Lim (writer, editor) on stage.

Armani Ad Campaign Hires First Asian Model
According to New York Magazine's fashion blog, Japanese model Takeshi Kaneshiro will be the first Asian model to appear in Emporio Armani's fall ad campaign. The half-Chinese, half-Japanese model joins the ranks of soccer superstar David Beckham in strutting his stuff in his skivvies on a billboard. I know, it'd be more heartening if it was an Asian American model, but let's hope this step toward diversification is one that'll open doors to more leading men who happen to be Asian American.

Philip Lim for GAP
I was on my way to East West Players' 42 Visionary Awards last night (post to follow) when I crossed a major intersection in Hollywood and saw this:

philiplim2.jpg
Please excuse the sepia tone. I wasn't trying to be artistic. My kid sister changed it while she was playing with my camera and I was not bad ass enough to change it back, take the picture, and continue driving like a good citizen without running any tourists over.

Anyway, do you see what I see?

America's Next Top Model: Bay Area Search
Remember Tina Nguyen from San Jose who won The Bay Area Search for America's Next Top Model? 19 years old, full time student, picked from 500 different portfolios.

She kind of reminds me of a young Joan Chen. Not that Joan Chen could look any younger (putting the rest of us to shame).

Well, looks like CW is at it again with a second round.

India Craze
Flying somewhere is a great excuse to do impulse buying. Impulse trashy magazine buying that is (although there was once I spent $2 something buying a tiny piece of dark chocolate). Usually when i am waiting at the airport for my 1 hour and 15 minutes flight down to Los Angeles, I'll grab a copy of Allure. I admit, it's not the best selection out there. A whole magazine dedicated to makeup and hairstyle is not intellectually stimulating, but it does make that flight, and often times delayed, go by that much faster.

Oh, and in my personal opinion, I think it's better than Cosmopolitan. I'd rather learn about a new bronzer than recycled sex tips please.

However, I have never felt compelled enough to subscribe to it, even when they offered the $1 a issue deal. I'm not sure why, but something about the magazine was just, blah.

As I was flipping through my March copy of Allure today, I discovered why.
