Bruce Lee Celebration

This year marks the 70th birthday of legend Bruce Lee. To celebrate, the San Diego Asian Film Foundation will present an outdoor screening of Enter the Dragon, with special appearance by co-star Jim Kelly, a martial arts exhibition, and Bruce Lee look-alike contest. More info here.

AAJA National Convention

The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) presents "Back to the Future", its 21st Annual National Convention, with a variety of workshops and panels. Be sure to check out the panel "A Hyphenated World" -- which will address how journalists can counter stereotypes -- and feature Hyphen co-founder and board member Bernice Yeung, as well as San Francisco Chronicle columnist Jeff Yang and bloggers Diana Nguyen and Jen Wang of Disgrasian.com. "Playing for Peace"

In response to the recent hate crimes against women of Asian descent, ages 50-70 in the Lower East Side and the rash of hate crimes against Mexicans and gays in Staten Island committed by adolescents, the Organization of Chinese Americans New York Chapter and commmunity partners will host the Fourth Annual Hate Crimes Prevention Art Contest for Youth and Handball/Basketball Tournament. Local elected officals and community leaders will also be present.

Going Green: New Environmental Art from Taiwan

The Asian American Arts Initiative and the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education present the new exhibit Going Green, which will offer US audiences an international perspective on environmental arts, and reflect approaches to nature from Taiwan's contemporary artists. Exhibit runs through August 20th. Tues - Fri 10 am to 6 pm. More info here.

Korean BBQ Cook-Off

The Korean American Coalition presents the Second Annual Korean BBQ Cook-Off, which will showcase the best dishes by Korean BBQ restaurants and vendors. Featuring a panel of high-profile judges (including actress Sandra Oh and Consul General Jae Soo Kim of the Republic of Korea), an all-you-can-eat contest, and a Soju Mix-Off. More info here.

APIA Open Mic @  National Poetry Slam

The National Poetry Slam brings poets from all over the country to battle it out to become this year's champion. The event includes an APIA open mic featureing local and national spoken word talent, hosted by the Twin Cities' own Bao Phi and Sonic Rain. This will also be a community-building event, in preparation for the National APIA Spoken Word Poetry Summit, which will happen July 2011 in the Twin Cities. More info here.

Health Journalism Fellowships

The California Endowment is offering fellowships for an all-expenses-paid program in Los Angeles October 21-24 2010 and January 20-23, 2011.
