Contemporary Asian American Artists and the Social Imaginary

Margo Machida, one of the leading scholars on Asian American art, will discuss issues explored in her new book Unsettled Visions: Contemporary Asian American Artists and the Social Imaginary. Topics will include migration flows of the 1990s, hipster embrace of "Asian" cultures, and new forms of globalized contact and conflict. Machida will also examine a diverse body of artwork, including the shape-shifting personae of photographer Pipo Nguyen-Duy and the mutant, hybridized "species" sculpted by Ming Fay.

First Expressions & American Indian Film Festival

Check out an artist reception and film premiere of UNRESERVED: The Work of Louie Gong. Gong, an activist/contemporary artist of Chinese and Indigenous heritage, has gained popularity with Eighth Generation, his custom, hand-painted Coast Salish kicks. The First Expressions exhibit is presented in conjunction with the Seventh Annual American Indian Film Festival.

Lucky Girl Adoptee Symposium

I Am Korean American Seeks Personal Profiles

I Am Korean American is a new online project which encourages Korean Americans to submit personal profiles to a growing collection that showcases the Korean American community's diversity. The goal is to collect as many profiles as possible, in order to provide a rich and varied snapshot of individuals that identify as Korean American, as well as ultimately serve as a useful historical archive.
