Stuck Elevator Artist Conversations


Byron_02.jpgA/P/A Institute artists-in-residence -- composer Byron Au Yong and hip-hop poet Aaron Jafferis -- will discuss their operatic performance "Stuck Elevator". The project recalls the April 2005 incident in which undocumented Chinese deliveryman Ming Kuang Chen became trapped in an elevator for three days. More info here.

Sheth's new work Toward a Political Philosophy of Race examines how a liberal "color-blind" society enables racism and discrimination by drawing on historical examples. Rajagopalan, author of Muslims of Metropolis: The Stories of Three Immgirant Families in the West, will moderate a discussion after the reading.

The Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program and UCLA Asian American Studies Center presents Professor Lane Ryo Hirabayashi and his latest book Japanese American Resettlement Through the Lens, with the last surviving full-time War Relocation Authority (WRA) photographer Hikaru Carl Iwasaki.The WRA photos --  portraying Japanese Americans attempting to blend back into mainstream society --  appeared in newspapers and other sources between 1943 and 1945. Iwassaki, who was imprisoned with his family at the WRA's Heart Mountain camp in Wyoming, will share his personal account. More info here.

At the risk of sounding immodest, the event will feature a killer lineup, with spoken word queen Kelly Tsai, rapper Koba, singer-songwriter/emcee Taiyo Na, comedian Ali Wong, and many more amazing talents. Jams spun by the one-and-only DJ Boo. Yes, it's a Sunday night, but think of the children!
