Sanjay Gupta Is Obama's Pick for Surgeon General
sanjay-gupta.jpgCNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta is President-elect Obama's pick to be surgeon general, according to the Washington Post, CNN and other media outlets.

If confirmed, it looks like Gupta would be the first permanent Asian American surgeon general. Kenneth Moritsugu was acting surgeon general from August 2006 to September 2007.

It seems like Obama is putting together a pretty diverse team and it could be the most Asian Americans in a presidential administration. Steven Chu is tapped for energy secretary and Eric Shinseki for veterans affairs.

The Wall Street Journal Health Blog notes that the position is primarily a talking head job, so a TV reporter is a good pick. What do you think?

i think all 3 of these high level appointments who are API are good choices. i never knew of sanjay gupta as anything but a CNN guy, so it never occurred to me he would be selected for surgeon general - but i always liked him. so say word. i'm sure he'll do a great job.

There are some serious questions being raised about his commitment to public health, his ethical compass (big Pharma sponsorships), and his scoffing at a single-payer health system.

See this article for a note about Rep. Jon Conyers' opposition, and the Physicians for a National Health Program site for more details.

I thought that Sanjay Gupta was more of a "I play a doctor on TV for CNN" than an actual real doctor--let alone someone qualified to be Surgeon General of the entire US of A.
