A bit of a short notice I know, but I wanted to let the bay peeps know that Mr. Hyphen 2006, Robin Sukhadia, is coming to a location near you! Ok, I know that he lives in the bay area, but you know, just trying to hype up his appearance. You can't blame me. It's Mr. Hyphen!
Robin will be speaking on a panel at the 2008 Annual Membership Meeting for an organization called Chinese for Affirmative Actions. Along with him, there will be Asian American activists from API Equality, Helen Zia Fellowship for Social Change, Friends of Educational Opportunities in Chinatown, Asian Americans for Civil Rights and Equality, and other organizations.

Wayne Wang, noted director of Chan is Missing, Smoke, and the divisive (at least among some Asian Americans) The Joy Luck Club, has this particular filmgoer wondering about the status of his latest project, Good Cook, Likes Music.
The storyline according to IMDB.com is as follows: “A slacker and lovable loser lives with his mother in a trailer park. One drunken night, he sends away for a mail-order bride, who ends up being a musical prodigy, and together, they change each other's lives.”

So, I finally got around to seeing Juno this weekend. It was great, even if the whole Diablo Cody-stripper-hype was getting on my nerves. I got over it, stopped drinking haterade, and give her mad props.

I picked up ReadyMade at the grocery store yesterday in a fit of desire to be more organized -- that's the theme of the new issue -- and found a great article about the new efficiency gurus like Tim Ferriss and Julie Morgenstern. I immediately wasted 45 minutes surfing the websites of all these people and found Lifehack.org to be the most palatable and useful. I'm not the only one who likes it, supposedly it was -- at one point -- the 40th most popular blog in the world.

What does it mean to be a minority? And what does it matter?
With Obama downplaying the race factor, Hillary supporters and critics alike highlighting her almost-cried-but-didn't moment, and Edwards recently -- and oddly -- referred to as a "minority" on the Tyra Banks Show last week, I'm a little confused as to the role race and gender (and sometimes class) are playing in this election on the Dem side.

This year’s Sundance Film Festival, currently still in progress, has a promising number of films featuring Asian artists in front of or behind the camera. While the majority of these entries come from international filmmakers from Asia, there are a few APA directors getting a chance to showcase their talents as Sundance official selections in ’08.

So I recently learned that Nickelodeon is premiering a new animated series called "Ni Hao, Kai-lan," to air beginning Feb. 7, 2008.
Feb. 7 is the beginning of the new lunar year, the year of the Rat.
The show targets preschoolers, kids 2-5, and sounds like it will be bilingual, in English and Mandarin. The press release makes it sound like the purpose of the show is to teach little kids how to speak Mandarin.

Yes. We were forgotten. Despite all the uproar about Asian Americans as a political force in this upcoming 2008 presidential election, we [I’m Filipino] still do not matter when it comes to the “American” political consciousness.

I found this article on Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s ACLU lawyer daughter, Amrit Singh (who co-authored this recent report Administration of Torture: A Documentary Record from Washington to Abu Ghraib and Beyond ) to be an interesting take on South Asians who end up living in America (or the West in general) -- especially with Benazir Bhutto’s son so prominently in the news.

The Grammy Awards celebrates its 50th anniversary next month, and judging by this year’s nominees it seems that very few API musicians and performers will be gracing the stage to pick up a gramophone statuette.
That is, unless Tia Carrere (yes, that Tia Carrere) wins for Best Hawaiian Music Album. Or if pianist Lang Lang wins for Best Instrumental Soloist(s) Performance (with Orchestra).
The dearth of Asian/Pacific Islander musical artists in the U.S. isn’t exactly a surprise. Yes, we all know about Jin Tha MC and the Filipino member of the Black Eyed Peas. Seeing a Grammy telecast devoid of API nominees and winners isn’t the shock of the century; maybe some of these artists just aren’t putting out notable material.
But what about one particular Sri Lankan-born, London-raised, political female rapper who happened to land on nearly every music critics’ ‘Best of 2007’ list, including the writers at Rolling Stone, Spin, and Entertainment Weekly?

I first caught Cynthia Lin's show at the HotHouse in Chicago over a year ago, where the diminutive singer/songwriter was crooning "Skipping in NYC," a catchy little love song that takes place somewhere between Sixth Avenue and Chinatown. At 5'2", she's the Taiwanese-American petit oiseau of folk jazz, reminiscent of Edith Piaf and Joni Mitchell, with a big voice and jazzy melodies.
