Don't forget, there's a Hyphen party tonight to celebrate the release of the Faith Issue. Yes, it's been out for more than a month already, but I'm sure you won't mind that we're using our latest issue as an excuse to throw a party.

It was pointed out to me the other night that I’m a living, breathing embodiment of the stereotypical quiet Asian.

I like rice, but I like Theatre Rice even more!
Theatre Rice, a popular modern Asian American theatre group on the U.C. Berkeley campus is having its showcase this weekend! If you go, who knows, maybe you'll hit a JACKPOT?

I work at a media organization where we look at the news through a mostly ethnic lens, which -- along with my work at Hyphen -- makes the Virginia Tech shooting a very complicated news day. I haven't had a whole lot of time to orchestrate my thoughts on this yet, but here are a few things that have me thinking.

Andrew Lam at New American Media articulates what might have crossed your mind when you found out that the Virginia Tech shooter was Asian in Let It Be Some Other 'Asian.
Media Matters for America discusses right-winger Debbie Schuessel's blog entry mentioned in Lam's article, where she assumed that the shooter was "Paki."
Speculations also targeted a Chinese American student as discussed on Tripmaster Monkey.
And, of course, said Asians fear a backlash. Korean American parents are picking up their kids from school and taking them home.
Others have been quick to mention that another South Korean student was shot, as well as an Indian professor.
The Asian American Journalists Association is calling for the media to "avoid using racial identifiers unless there is a compelling or germane reason. ... The effect of mentioning race can be powerfully harmful."
Cho Seung-Hui is repeatedly described as "thorough" in this New York Times article. Do the adjectives used to describe him have a basis in perceptions of ethnicity? As in the idea that Asians are efficient? I'd have to do more research, but it seems like an interesting line to pursue.
Isn't it funny how when there's a white mass murderer, white people aren't afraid of this same sort of ethnically-related backlash?

This is another great event for our friends in the Bay Area, especially if you live close to Stanford!
The Intercollegiate Taiwanese American Students Association (ITASA) has invited all Hyphen supporters to its Night Market and Culture Night, both a part of its 2007 West Coast Conference titled Rekindling the Flame.
Of course, the Hyphen team will be there to meet and greet our supporters from the community and spread the Hyphen love. So, if you're looking for a night of excitement or if you're just really really really hungry (read my list of food below), we will see you there!

I was eating dinner at the Westfield mall in downtown SF the other day when I saw Bobby Lee. Bobby Lee! You know, of Mad TV. He plays every Asian character from Connie Chung to Kim Jong-il. You may have also seen him as an overeager college student in Harold & Kumar. I last saw him on screen in Chris Chan Lee's Undoing at the SF Asian American Intl Film Fest, where he had a brief role. He is 1/4 of the Asian American touring stand-up show and DVD The Kims of Comedy. (Not familiar with Bobby Lee? Watch this MadTV parody of Memoirs of a Geisha)

I'm cracking up at this video of an Asian American man doing 500 impressions of various people in 2 minutes. That's right, 500. Who is this guy?
OK, that's it for now. Back to work.

Bay Area folks (or those of you down for some driving), check out this free event over the weekend. Our friends over at UC Berkeley's Asian Pacific American Student Development (APASD) and Asian American Studies program are presenting their 17th Annual Asian Pacific Islander Issues Conference titled FROM THE GROUND UP: Breaking Barriers, Building Coalitions. And it costs absolutely nothing (on your end, that is).
